LMU Student Film - 2025

MARKING TOMORROW

Set in the 2008 recession, a construction worker loses his job and spirals into a depressive state, as he falls back into his destructive relationship with alcohol.

“He clutches his head, and makes his way to the bathroom, knocking over the AA chips as he goes, and pulls the calendar off the wall.”

We built his New York City, one-bedroom apartment, on LMU’s soundstage. This included a bedroom/kitchen, entry foyer, and a bathroom. We cleaned and repaired all of LMU’s available flats and constructed two custom window flats with functioning panes. We hung wallpaper in all the rooms and used a faux wood mat for the floor.

Frank, the morning before he is laid off. He checks his bills and grumbles about the work day ahead of him.

The fire escape stairs were cut from an existing staircase into pieces, then painted and propped onto apple boxes.

The building across the street is an 18’ backdrop.

The entryway foyer. We fitted the moulding and baseboard, then hung the door and fixed a doorknob along with two additional locks. This choice was made to depict Frank’s choice in seclusion, by the physical action he makes in locking his door every night when he comes home.

A top-down view of the aftermath. At this point in the film, Frank wakes up on the floor to find he’s left his apartment a wreck, seen by the knocked over lamp and vomit on the wood paneling.

A view of LMU’s soundstage as we sorted flats to “better” and “worse” piles.

We’ve just rolled out the wood paneling mat and are beginning to tape out the floorplan.

“The bathroom is claustrophobic, a small sink and mirror.”

We installed the toilet, mirror, toilet paper holder, light, and sink. Everything was ordered online, so the challenge was to distress the whole room as much as possible, to make it look like a weathered New York apartment.

In the kitchen, dishes are piled up. A shadow of the fire escape stairs is cast on the wall by the setting sun, depicting the end of the work day, moments before Frank returns from work.

We installed all of the appliances and cabinetry, then cut a hole in the countertop with a jigsaw, large enough for the sink to fit into.

“One by one he scratches out the check marks on all the days of September prior to the 15th.

The 16th remains empty.

He checks off September 17th, 2008.”
